When you're planning to be away, one of the first decisions you'll face is whether to book a drop-in visit or an overnight stay for your pet. Both are great options — the right choice depends on your pet's needs, personality, your budget, and how long you'll be gone. Here's how the two compare, what each one costs, and a simple way to decide.
Drop-In Visits
Drop-in visits are shorter check-ins — ours run about 30 minutes — where your sitter comes to your home once or twice a day to feed, play with, and check on your pet. At Pawsides, drop-in visits run $25–$40 per visit and always end with a photo update. They're ideal for:
- Independent cats who do fine alone but need feeding, a clean litter box, and a little attention
- Dogs who don't need constant company but require regular feeding and outdoor time
- Short trips of one or two nights where your pet is comfortable at home
- Multiple pets who keep each other company between visits
With drop-ins, your pet stays in their own environment, which reduces stress — especially for cats and anxious dogs. If your pet needs pills, drops, or topical meds while you're away, medication administration is available as an add-on, so a drop-in can still work for pets on a treatment schedule.
Overnight Stays
Overnight stays mean your sitter spends the night at your home, providing companionship and care from evening through morning. Overnight stays run $80–$120 per night, with all regular feeding, walks, and playtime included. They're the better fit for:
- Dogs who get anxious or lonely when left alone for long stretches
- Puppies or senior dogs who need more frequent attention and bathroom breaks
- Longer trips where more than a few hours alone would be too much
- Pets with medical needs that require close monitoring
Overnights also give you peace of mind that someone is always nearby if something unexpected happens — and because the sitter is living in your home, lights go on and off, mail gets collected, and the house looks lived-in while you're gone.

Side by Side
| Drop-in visits | Overnight stays |
|---|---|
| $25–$40 per visit | $80–$120 per night |
| ~30 minutes, 1–2 times daily | Evening through morning, plus regular care |
| Best for cats and independent dogs | Best for anxious dogs, puppies, and seniors |
| Great for 1–2 night trips | Great for longer trips and holidays |
| Photo update after every visit | Daily photo update |
| Pet has alone time between visits | Someone is there all night |
A good rule of thumb on cost: two drop-ins a day lands at $50–$80, so for pets who need more than two check-ins, an overnight stay often delivers more care per dollar — and a calmer pet.
How to Decide
Ask yourself:
- How long will you be gone? For one or two nights, most cats and easygoing dogs do great with drop-ins. For a week or more, the routine and company of an overnight sitter makes a real difference.
- How does your pet handle being alone? Some dogs are fine for 8 hours; others pace, whine, or chew the moment you leave. If your dog struggles with alone time, overnights are the safer bet.
- Does your pet have health or behavioral needs that require close supervision? Pets on multiple daily medications, very young puppies, and seniors with mobility issues usually do better with someone staying over.
- What's your budget? Drop-ins are more affordable for short trips. For longer trips with high-needs pets, compare the cost of 2–3 drop-ins per day against one overnight before assuming drop-ins are cheaper.
You can also mix the two: many of our clients book an overnight stay plus a midday dog walk, or bookend a few days of drop-ins with overnights on the first and last nights.
